Curl Alchemist FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions – The Curl Alchemist

1. What services do you offer?

At The Curl Alchemist, I specialise in curly hair care, offering:

  • Curly Cuts – dry cutting tailored to your natural curl pattern.
  • Hydration Treatments and Techniques – deeply nourishing services to restore shine, elasticity, and manageability.
  • Curly hair Rehab Treatments – designed to return your hair to its natural, healthy state after damage.
  • Curly Education Sessions – learn how to care for and style your curls at home.
  • Workshops & Training – for both clients and stylists wanting to expand their curl knowledge.

2. Which products do you use?

I support locally made, authentic, women-owned brands that are vegan, sustainable, and cruelty free where I can!

In the salon and online shop, you’ll find carefully chosen curly-approved lines such as Cabela, Clever Curl, Bounce Curl, Olaplex, and Malibu C. These products respect the needs of curls  from hydration to repair and I’ll always recommend the right ones for you at the end of your appointment.

3. How should I wear my hair for my first appointment?

For the best results, please arrive with your hair:

  • Down, detangled, and in its natural state (not tied up, stretched, or braided).
  • Styled dry as you would normally wear it, with minimal product build-up.
  • Avoid heavy oils, butters, or hairsprays so I can clearly see your curl pattern and shape.

Your appointment is all about making change in-house, so I can see your hair as it truly behaves. This allows me to create a cut and care routine that works specifically for your curls.

4. How often should I get a curly cut?

Most curlies benefit from a cut every 3–6 months, depending on your hair goals, growth, and styling routine. Hydration treatments in between keep your curls defined and healthy.

5. I’m new to curly care – can you help me get started?

Absolutely! Many of my clients are just beginning their curly journey. I offer education alongside your appointment and will show you how to cleanse, hydrate, style, and protect your curls at home so you leave with confidence, not just a haircut.

6. Do you cut hair straight?

Yes, I am able to cut straight hair – but 99% of the time I work with curlies. My methods are designed to embrace natural texture, and that’s where my true passion lies.

7. Do you offer children’s curly services?

Yes! I love working with young curlies. Gentle, age-appropriate cuts and curl education help little ones (and their parents) learn how to care for curls from the very beginning.

Children’s Pricing: From the age of 10 years, some children may be charged at adult pricing if they require a wash and finish, or if they have a substantially larger amount of hair that needs extra time and care as I work on time not a set charge.

8. Where are you located?

The Curl Alchemist is based at 122 Helensburgh Road, Dunedin, New Zealand. While I no longer work regularly in Clutha, I occasionally host workshops and can travel for salon education.

9. Can I buy products online?

Yes! Many of the salon-quality products I use are available on my website for online ordering. This means you can continue your curl care at home with the right tools and products I’ve personally recommended.

I also ship around New Zealand.
